Despite growing evidence on the possible detrimental effects of physical punishment, it remains a common discipline strategy among parents in Asia, though few studies have examined this from a cultural perspective. In this seminar, we report the findings of two mixed-methods studies involving Singapore parents and young adults who have received physical punishment during childhood. These studies demonstrate the intergenerational transmission of harsh discipline, and its potential long-lasting impact on adjustment and well-being even within an Asian context.
